ENGLISH-ROMANIAN Parallel Dictionary of Musical Terms extended with the related ROMANIAN-ENGLISH Short Dictionary. ORIGINAL !, EXHAUSTIVE !, SYSTEMATIZED !, ILLUSTRATED!
Second edition, revised
The two revised volumes are now accompanied by a third volume, the Supplement, which brings together approximately 490 new terms, as well as 24 figures that explore interdisciplinary aspects at the interface of music with the exact sciences and the arts, in a systematic and modern approach.
We would like to mention that the third volume (the Supplement) is offered free of charge when ordering the complete set, consisting of the two main volumes.
We believe that this edition makes a significant contribution to the study and teaching of music, providing updated terminology and an indispensable working tool for academics, musicians, researchers, and students alike.
___________________________
The “Galaxia Gutenberg” Publishing House has prepared for its readers a surprise by launching a less common publishing species (i.e. a bilingual dictionary of musical terms), characterized by absolute originality, as will be seen below.
The
book impresses due to its quantitative dimensions (about 1800 pages in A4
format, over 6900 terms, more than 580 complex drawings designed with talent
and knowledge by the author etc.) but also by way of its remarkable synthesis
attribute which gives it a greater information density.
This
dictionary distinguishes itself from other similar documents of its category,
gaining, in places, the scope of a double musical treaty. Noteworthy are the
original contributions of the author: 1) the idea of a “parallel”
bilingual dictionary (the two-way correspondence of two distinct dictionaries:
English and Romanian); 2) the systematization of musical terms and their
multiple correlations; 3) the exhaustive treatment of the keys kinship
(relationships); 4) the original approach of the communication through
music (about ten types of "channels" are identified): detailing
aspects of musical language, treating musical semantics through the theory of
"semantic cipher", identifying types of connotative and deonotative
communication (the latter including metaphorical communication), a
proposal of a Method of semiotic analysis of a musical work; 5) the
comparative analysis of musical systems, but also of musical elements; 6) the
development of three-dimensional diagrams for all types of operatic voices; 7)
the exhaustive treatment of the voice under its three polysemantic aspects: as
the sound source, as the part (melodic line) and as a key-element of the vocal
resonation and registration; 8) the design of original visualisation diagrams
based on unique pattern for American musical genres such as blues, jazz,
country music, folk music, rock music, etc., in which the subgenres, origins,
fusions and influences of those genres are highlighted; 9) the detailed display
of the chord categories and their placement in complex inter-correlation
diagrams; 10) the extended treatment of tuning systems (Pythagorean,
natural / Zarlino and equal temperated) and the proposing hundreds of new terms
for the intervals of the full natural system; 11) the modeling, inspired
by the multi-layer organization OSI (Open System Interconnection) for: hearing,
seeing (sight reading), compositional creation, performing (vocal, instrumental
and conducting). To name a few.
The
dictionary is a remarkable source of information for complementing the school
curriculum – especially those of a graphic nature, used by music teachers.
Through its unique way of modeling musical phenomena, the dictionary could sit
at the heart of multiple interdisciplinary areas and can create new ways of
approaching music theory, in which specialists from other professional domains
are also involved.
The dictionary is intended for: authorized translators from English to Romanian and viceversa, musicologists and music researchers, music teachers, students of conservatories, music pupils in art high schools profiled on music, practicing musicians, music lovers with knowledge in the field of music, but also for mathematicians, physicists, researchers in audiology and vocology, engineers etc. who will understand music from the point of view of their own profession, and last but not least, for any individual who feels the need for an incursion in the field of theoretical music in order to broaden the scope of his/her individual general knowledge.
