Only faith possesses within itself a hope that is fulfilled—and not a mere clinging to the future—because, beyond all temporal intermediate stages, it grasps the Fulfiller; indeed, it is grasped by Him. It seeks to grasp that goal which has already grasped it from all eternity (Philippians 3:12–13).
Faith unconditionally grasps the whole from all time in all its fragments, because it has already been grasped from all time by the incarnate whole and incorporated into its body. That is why faith has no reason to escape from time, along with idealisms, into an “eternal moment,” for it is precisely in time that it holds the whole, since the whole holds it in time. But faith has no reason either to escape from an unfulfilled present into a fulfilled future, for it would lose, along with the abandoned and devalued present, the eternity that dwells within it. It is filled with this eternity only by fulfilling its mission in the present: only in hodie [= today] do time and eternity coincide.
